Practice cane is great if you're a beginning reed maker and tend to ruin a lot of reeds Unfortunately, if you're using good cane, that could get pretty costly so we came up with "practice cane".
This cane might have gotten rejected because the cane was too soft, grainy, or uneven, a little crooked, too "smiley", too "frowny", too wide, too narrow, or maybe because we forgot to label what shape it was.
Whatever the reason, it might not meet our highest standards for when we make our reeds, but it's perfect to practice tying-on, scraping, making mistakes, and you can still make a decent reed out of it!
